Known as Joe Slater or Joe Slatter Hut.

Located on the lower slopes of Mt Rufus, in the Cradle Mountain National Park.

History

The hut commemorates HEC engineer, Joe Slatter who met a tragic death in Melbourne in a railway accident.

The Joe Slatter Hut was built by the Mount Rufus Ski Club, whose members were mostly HEC workers at Bronte Park and Tarraleah. When those construction towns closed down, ownership of the huts moved to the Wellington Ski Club.

Mr. Joseph Arthur Slatter, of Wicklow Street, Ormond was an assistant civil engineer to the State Electricity Commission. He died in 1954 as a result of injuries received in an accident at Ormond railway station.

This hut is one of two on the track to the summit of Mt Rufus, the other being the Gingerbread hut near the summit. Both now have the Wellington Ski Club as caretakers.
